How do you add an assembly video to a Shopify product page?
In your Shopify admin, open the product and add the video to its media: upload an .mp4, .mov or .webm file of up to 1 GB and 10 minutes, or add a YouTube or Vimeo link. Shopify says your store's theme has to support video for it to show. We make the assembly video from the PDF manual you already ship, from $399.
Shopify's video rules, as Shopify publishes them
| Rule | What Shopify says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Where to add it | In Products, open the product. Under Media, Upload new adds a file; Select existing, then Add from URL, adds a YouTube or Vimeo link | Adding media |
| File type | .mp4, .mov or .webm | Product media types |
| File size | Up to 1 GB | Product media types |
| Length | Up to 10 minutes | Product media types |
| Resolution | Up to 4K (4096 x 2160 px) | Product media types |
| Frame rate | Up to 120 frames per second | Uploading files |
| Bigger or longer videos | Put it on YouTube or Vimeo and add its link: the file limits don't apply to those links | Uploading files |
| YouTube links | The video must be Public or Unlisted, linked in the standard youtube.com/watch?v= form. Shorts links aren't supported | Adding media |
| Vimeo links | The video must allow embedding on other sites; use its direct vimeo.com link | Adding media |
| Thumbnail | The video's first frame, unless you upload your own (not from the mobile app) | Media editor |
| Your theme | The store's theme has to support the media you add | Product media types |
Other places a video can go
- In the product description: the rich text editor's Insert video button takes an embed code from YouTube or Vimeo, so a video you made goes on one of those sites first. (Rich text editor)
- In Content > Files, which holds video files under the same limits. Shopify says to upload files there only when they're meant for public access. (Uploading files)
A link for the QR code in the box
- Shopify says that when you replace a file in Files, its name stays the same but its link changes. (Uploading files)
- So point a QR code printed in the manual at your product page, which keeps its address when you swap the video, rather than at the video file.
What Shopify's help pages don't say
- Whether a product video plays by itself, loops or plays with sound in your store: the pages on product media and adding media don't cover it. (Product media types) (Adding media)
- Shopify's guidance for theme developers says a video should start paused when the page loads, and be muted if it does play on load. (Media UX guidelines)
What makes an assembly video useful
- It follows your manual: the same part letters and step order, so a customer can pause it with the manual open beside it.
- One step at a time, with the parts for that step shown before they go on.
- Close-ups wherever a part has a right way round, a left and a right, or a screw that looks like another.
- The finished product at the end, so the customer can check theirs against it.
